a Puzzle

Once upon a time somebuddy eMailed this puzzle and I spent a helluva lot of time playing with it and eventually responded to the eMail, like so:

Hey! Neato puzzle!!

I notice, in the "puzzle", that

  • some vertical and horizontal lines are more than one pixel thick.
  • some squares are 34 x 34 pixels and others are 33 x 34 pixels.
  • the heavy black outlines are DEFINITELY more than one pixel thick ... and cover any wee pixel errors!
If'n y'all do *exact* 34 x 34 pixel squares, you can pick out the misalignment.
And, if y'all assume the puzzle is 13 x 5 and the red triangle has a base of 8 and
you use good ol' Pythagorus a2 + b2 = c2
you get different lengths than are suggested by the "puzzle"
so you can eliminate a half square (and cover things up with THICK black outlines :^)

That means the coloured pieces seem to have a Total Area which is too small by a half square.

'course, y'all kin move the pieces around (and cover up with those THICK black outlines)
and so the coloured pieces are too small by a WHOLE square.

Cute!

Peter

Note that the red and green pieces in A have a total height of 5.
But they do not have individual heights of 3 and 2
... but rather heights of 3.08 and 1.92.
All the pieces do not fit into the triangle in C (without fiddling).
