One of these days, gummy-stuff will no longer be available (I'm gittin' more decrepit every day).
Although you can still download everything you like from my website as long as it's still there (and it's free, eh?)
... somebuddy suggested that I make all this stuff available on a CD.
This CD contains everything (almost) that's on my website and ...
>Almost?
Yes, almost.
I've deleted the pictures of my grandkids, greetings to various discussion forums and net-friends, birthday cards, pictures of our camping trips and ...
>And the spreadsheets?
They're all on this CD but, unlike my website (where they live .ZIPd
at geocities.com or 0catch.com and you have to download them), they're here, unZIPd.
There are some things you should know:
- My website has links to stuff on the Web. They'll still work (on this CD) ... but only if you're connected to the internet.
- References to geocities.com or 0catch.com, from which
you'd download a .ZIPd spreadsheet, are still there.
However, all the spreadsheets are also on this CD, in a folder called SS.
>ZIPd?
Yes, that's where I've stuck all the spreadsheets, both the .ZIPd and unZIPd versions. Just look in the SS folder ... they're all there.
>Why are the ZIPd ones there?
They're easier to e-mail ... in case you want to send one (or many) to a friend.
>I can do that?
Of course. Everything on my Website and on this CD is available to you and your friends (make copies, give it away, for free).
- At the bottom of the gummy-stuff page there's a search engine provided by FreeFind.com.
(FreeFind.com updates their gummy_stuff data every month and, if you're connected to the internet,
you'll still be able to search my Website.)
>And the CD, eh?
Uh ... no, not the CD.
FreeFind.com just keeps records on the stuff that's at
gummy_stuff on the Web ...
so you can (if'n you've a mind too) search my Website with the FreeFind search at the bottom of the gummy_stuff page on this CD.
For example, if you search for "spreadsheet" you'll get over a hundred references to tutorials which involve a "spreadsheet".
(There were almost 500 searches last week, mostly for the word "spreadsheet" )
>And how do I search the CD?
Somewhere, somehow ... I must be able to provide a hard disk search. I'm working on it.
- If, after playing with this CD for a while, you visit gummy_stuff on the Web
and find new stuff, then you can just download the new stuff to your PC ... but your gummy_stuff page (on this CD) won't reflect the new stuff
>That's pretty poor. How'd I find the new stuff after I download it from your Website?
Well, I'd make a new gummy_stuff page just for this CD. You can download it from my Website to replace this CD version. The downloaded version will have references to any new stuff.
>Would it be different than your Website page?
Of course. My Website page has my grandkids and other stuff that don't hardly belong on this CD.
In fact, the downloaded gummy_stuff page would look just like the one on this CD (that is, like
this) ... but with links to the latest stuff (which you can, of course, download from my Website).
Oh ... one other thingy:
- When you download a spreadsheet from the net, it'll be .ZIPd. You can stick it in the SS folder and unZIP it there.
>How would I put the new stuff ... the stuff that I download ... how would I put it on the CD?
Uh ... you could if you have a CD burner.
Otherwise, I'd suggest that you copy all the stuff on this CD to your PC hard disk, in a folder you could call ... uh, gummy_stuff.
>Then put the new stuff in that folder!
Exactly, and ...
>With all the other spreadsheets in that SS folder, eh?
Exactly ... and remember:
Everything on my Website and on this CD is available to you and your friends (make copies, give it away, for free).
|
>So what's in the SS folder?
Click!
>That's everything?
Well ... there's other miscellaneous stuff, not on the above list.
In fact, there are over 300 files in the SS folder, including both ZIPd and unZIPd spreadsheets.
In total, I think there are something like 3000 files on the CD.
Notes:
- Although the tutorials may refer to spreadsheets which download from some Website (like 0catch.com or geocities.com),
the spreadsheets are also available on this CD, in the SS folder. (Newer spreadsheets, not on this disk, may be downloaded from the Net.)
- There may be some (less-than-useful) spreadsheets that I've used just to generate charts for a tutorial.
You may want to
delete these (!)
- There may are also be ancient stuff (including ancient spreadsheets) ... made before I got smarter.
>Lots of those, I imagine ...
- There are some spreadsheets named after people who asked for a spreadsheet to do this or that.
- Each CD is written and scanned (using Norton AntiVirus) immediately before mailing.

About the spreadsheets:
Many of the spreadsheets have macros (to download data from Yahoo or perform a bunch of calculations or whatever).
From time to time Yahoo changes the URL which the spreadsheet uses to download
For this (and any other reason) you may want to modify the macro(s). Here's how to do it:
- RIGHT-click on the button that calls the macro into service. Example
- In the menu that pops up you should see Assign Macro.... Click it.
- Then click on the Edit button which appears.
- TThen the macro code appears in a window. (You may have to enlarge the window.) Modify to your heart's content.
- When you're finished, click: File / Close and Return to Excel ...
- Pray.
Now try the modified macro by clicking on the button that calls the macro.
If it works as you hoped (!), you can save it (perhaps under a different name so the original file is retained).
